Model Wanted by Step Taylor
Description
Ross is a bright, good-looking 17-year-old on the verge of graduating high school. So why is he drunk and naked at a stranger's house the night before his last exam? And why is he holding a bloody pair of scissors? Model Wanted is a fierce examination of poverty, sexuality, drugs, homophobia, and class that forces us to ask what role society's norms play in shaping its so-called monsters. Playwright Step Taylor found the seed for Model Wanted, in a news story out of Saint John, New Brunswick. A young man looking for odd jobs online ended up at a 29 year-old's house, where he received money and a 12-pack of beer to pose for photos. "The details of the crime are sketchy. But the kid ended up stabbing the man and leaving him for dead. I felt compelled to explore what might lead a person so young and with so much of his life ahead of him to lash out like that. In the end, it's not that easy to explain. The play is very much about the human complexities that go into such a violent act," says Step.
